2. Airalo: Popular but Mixed Reliability

The next eSIM on the list is Airalo. While it is probably one of the most common ones in the eSIM space but I have doubts about their claims and don’t particularly recommend them especially if you run out of data and need something reliable.

Their 15-days unlimited Turkey plan is US$51.00 and unlimited is not really unlimited.

In Turkey, my friend's experience was mixed. We noticed intermittent connection drops and slower speeds in certain areas especially once we left Istanbul. In Cappadocia, she was seeing speeds under 3 Mbps, compared to the 20+ Mbps I was getting on Sim Local using the same Turkcell network.

The activation was not as simple as I thought it would be. Instead my Sim Local eSIM was active in minutes, she spent well over an hour troubleshooting hers, cycling through airplane mode restarts and re-entering APN settings manually.

3. Holafly: Not Even That Unlimited as What They Claimed

This is probably the most expensive from all the plans out there. For 15 days, you have to pay $55 which is a bit more expensive and speeds can be throttled after heavy usage.

From what I've seen reported by travellers, throttling can kick in after as little as 5GB of usage in a day which isn't hard to hit if you're streaming maps, uploading reels, or working remotely. At that point, you're essentially dropped to 2G-like speeds, making the "unlimited" label feel misleading.

In terms of customer support, Holafly offers a chatbot-first experience with slow escalation to human agents similar to Airalo, and a far cry from the responsive live chat support I experienced with Sim Local.

For the average traveller who mainly needs data for navigation, social media, and everyday browsing, unlimited data is often more than necessary.

A lot of people get it only because they assumed it is the next best option after Airalo but I suggest doing your due diligence before getting plans like this as you’d end up paying more for no reason.
